Sales tax exemptions on agricultural
input items are vitally important to every farmer and rancher.
On average, these exemptions equate to over 20% of net farm income (i.e.
without them farm income would be 20% lower.)
Just how significant are sales tax exemptions to
your operation?
The Sales Tax Exemption Calculator
shown below is an interactive tool that allows one to estimate the sales tax
exemption value for their individual operation.
As an added feature, the calculator also estimates the amount of sales
taxes that are paid on farm production expenses.
Published farm enterprise budgets along
with selected industry data were used to determine the amount of production
expenses per unit (acre, head, etc) that is tax exempt.
Using these totals and applying applicable sales tax rates, the value of
exemptions per unit is determined for selected commodities.
A similar approach was used to determine sales taxes paid per unit of
production.
To Use The Calculator
- Select which county your operation is in
- Select the commodity you produce
- Type in the number of units(acres, head) you produce
(Do not type a comma in the number, e.g. 1000)
- Click the Calculate button
Reading the Calculator:
The center box will show a range of
values for your sales tax exemptions. The
low number reflects only state and county taxes, while the high number includes
state, county and the highest local tax rate in your county.
As additional commodities are added, this box will keep a running total
of values. The lower box shows each individual entry included in the total.
If you have problems operating the Calculator, call 501-228-1211 during regular
business hours and we will calculate your values for you.
This calculator operates best with FireFox or Internet Explorer 5.5 and above.
